From the Foyer
HAT Wellington’s bright lights are now positively fluorescent Was the impression gained by listening in to 2ZB’s foyer impressions of the first night of the Grand Opera Company’s Wellington season. Ian Watkins thought he "might easily be speaking to you from Hollywood," likening the scintillating assemblage to that crowd of fair women and brave men who face the flashlights
at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Elsie Lloyd found the scene "reminiscent of first nights in pre-war London." Both commentators marvelled at the essential tightness of fashion in decreeing that the stern black-and-white of masculine evening dress should be there to set off the more recherche feminine toilettes. It was left to Elsie Lloyd to detail the ladies’ individual splendours, which certainly reflect great credit on the sartorial standards of the city, especially if we assume that most of .our notables follow Lady Troubridge’s dictum that last season’s ball gown is, adequate for this season’s theatre-going. I admired Elsie Lloyd’s virtuosity as a commentator, her unfailing memory for names and her ability to distinguish faille from taffetas at fourteen paces.
