NOTED ENGLISH TENOR South Island Tour For NZBS

ALTER MIDGLEY, the noted English tenor who arrives this week for a tour of New Zealand under contract to the NZBS, is one of the few tenors, of high lyric quality now singing in England. Although his voice may not as yet be widely ‘known in this country, he has a very big following in England. This has been especially true in recent years, since he has been singing as a leading tenor with the Covent Garden Opera Company, and broadcasting extensively for the BBC. With Peter Pears, of the Glyndebourne Opera, and Lester Ferguson, of the Cambridge Theatre, he is generally regarded as one of England’s best operatic tenors. Walter Midgley will arrive in Auckland this Thursday, March 10, from England, and will travel direct to Dunedin, where he will open his tour. His first New Zealand appearance will be at a public concert with Gladys Ripley in the Dunedin Town Hall Concert Chamber. It will be held on Tuesday, March 15, and the first part of the con-

cert will be broadcast, starting at 8.0 p.m, Further broadcasts next week from the joint tour of these two artists include a studio recital by Gladys Ripley ‘from. 4YZ at 8.0 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, a studio recital by Walter Midgley from 4YZ at 8.30 p.m. on Friday, March 18, and a relay of the first half of a public concert featuring, both singers from the Invercargill Town Hall. This will be heard from 4YZ at 8.0 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. Amongst Walter Midgley’s more re- | cent performances in England was a re- | cit&l at an Opera Promenade Concert | in the Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Walter Goehr. This concert was described on the programme as an introduction to opera for the people under the auspices of the National Music for Youth Movement. As Calaf in a recent produttion of Turandot at Covent Garden, he was said to have sung "with lyrical beauty of tone and increasing power." His accompanist on his New Zealand tour will probably be his wife, who is a pianist of no small distinction.
