SHEEP AND STATISTICS.
Sir-I have often wondered why sheep should produce in people a desire to dabble in statistics. One counts sheep to bring sleep. There are the ninety and nine as well as the lost one. There is also a special shepherd’s tally. Perhaps sheep were the first things counted on account of the necessity of separating the sheep from the goats. Now we have "Sundowner’s" word for it that if Walt Whitman had known sheep he would have forgotten to make poetry on his fellowship with sheep and on how all sheep were brothers and turned statistician and counted the leaves of grass eaten by that most statistical of animals.
