OPENING NIGHT AT 3XC TIMARU
[| HE opening of 3XC Timaru on Tuesday, January 18, marked the first step in the establishment, by the NZBS, of a chain of new stations specifically designed to serve the town or city, and the immediate surrounding district in which they are situated. Introduced by the Director of Broadcasting (Professor James Shelley), the Minister of Broadcasting (Hon. F. Jones) performed the in the studio, and other speakers were the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., D. C. Kidd, M.P., the Mayor of Timaru (A. E. S. Hanan), Mayor of 'Waimate ((W. F. Boland), Mayor of Temuka (G. A. Harris), and deputy-Mayor of Geraldine (Z. O. Sherratt). Speeches were followed by an hour of entertainment by Timaru performers. The Minister expressed the’ hope that the new low-powered stations in various parts of New Zealand would give a stimulus to local talent and help to foster choral; instrumental and dramatic work throughout the community. The Timaru station is now well established on the air with serials, BBC and NZBS productions, talks, variety, classical and light music, and other programmes including a session in which the station invites people in various walks of life to present recordings of their own choice.
