NZBS ROYAL ODE COMPETITION
£100 for Words and Music DURING the next few weeks New Zealanders who write verse or who compose music will be given an opportunity, through: the New Zealand Broadcasting Service, to enter for two competitions based on the subject "The Royal Visit to New Zealand in 1949." The first competition will be for a set of verses and entries must reach the Director of Broadcasting by noon on Thursday, December 16. The second competition, for a musical setting of the winnin verses for chorus and orchestra, will be held later and details of it have yet to be announced. For the winner of each competition there will be a prize of £50. Entry forms may be obtained from any . station, National or Commercial, of the NZBS.
NTRY to the competitions is restricted to people resident in New Zealand who were born in the Dominion, or who arrived in New Zealand. before they were 10 years old; and to people born outside New Zealand but who have resided here for 20 years. Each set of verses must be typewritten, or legibly handwritten, on one side of the paper only. Pages must be numbered consecutively and fastened at the top left-hand corner, and the first page should contain the title, number of lines, and a pen-name chosen by the author, whose actual name or address must not appear on the script. Each’ set of verses must "a ‘accompanied by an entry form (supplied by the NZBS) enclosed in a sealed envelope and endorsed with the title of the set of verses and the candidate’s penname. This envelope must then be attached to the verses, the whole en--closed in another envelope addressed to The Director, NZBS, P.O. Box 3045, Wellington-to be received by him not later than noon on December 16, No competitor will be allowed to put in more than three entries. a
Though it is desirable that the verses should not contain more than 40 lines, longer or shorter entries will be admissible. Competitors should note that the winning entry will be set to music and the judges will be entitled to consider the suitability of entries for this purpose. No entry which has already been broadcast in New Zealand, or the broadeast rights of which have been previously acquired by the NZBS, will be admitted to the competition. The author of the prize-winning entry must grant to the NZBS for a period of two years from the date of the award of the prize the exclusive rights without payment of fees, for New Zealand and Australia, as follows: (1) The broadcasting rights (including broadcasting by shortwave through Radio New Zealand); (2) the right to present the verses in a musical setting; (3) publication rights for the purpose of inviting applications for the competition to set the verses to music. No prize will be awarded to any entry in respect of which the author is unable to grant these rights to the NZBS. The decision of the judges appointed by the NZBS will, of course, be final, and no competitor will be entitled to. any explanation for the refusal of the. committee to. award a prize to such a competitor.
