SHORTWAVE HIGHLIGHTS
~UN and Canadian Transmissions HE two United Nations transmissions beamed to the Pacific are the afternoon rebroadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the evening transmission through the facilities of the "Voice of America" stations. These programmes are heard daily except Mondays at quite good strength from both services. The CBC transmissions begin at 3.10 p.m. over CKNC (17.82 mc/s., 16.84 metres) and CKCS (15.32, 19.58). Transmission opens with the UN News, followed by a 15-minute programme entitled UN To-day, a summary of UN activities during the day. The evening transmission is heard over the "Voice of America’ stations: KNBA (9.65 me/s., 31.20 metres), KNBI (15.13, 19.85), KRHO (17.80, 16.85), Manila (15.33, 19.57). This programme begins at 7.30 p.m. with the Headline News, followed at 7.50 p.m. by the News in full, and, at 8.0 p.m., a speech by one of the delegates or despatches from UN correspondents. Canadian Broadcasts F:VERY Sunday evening at 8.50 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation broadcasts its regular weekly programme to Australia and New Zealand. Interesting talks on various aspects of Canadian life are to be heard, and both stations are being heard just now at quite good strength: CHOL (11.72 mce/s., 25.60 metres), CHLS (9.61, 31.22). The first ten minutes are devoted to answering listeners’ letters and at 9.0 p.m. the News is broadcast. At 9.15 p.m. there is the feature "Canadian Chronicle"; at 9.30 p.m. "Prairie Schooner"; and at 9.45 p.m. "Cross Section." "Stories of Yesterday and Today" are heard at 10.0, followed by a report from UN. The transmission closes down at 10.30 p.m.
