ORCHESTRAS AND CONDUCTORS
Sir-It is rather irritating when radio atifouncets omit to mention the cofiductors whefi playing orchestral records, especially when the orchestra is playing ufider a guest conductor. Recently we heard ."Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute, played by the BBC Symphory Orchestra, H.M.V. reéorditig,’ afid no
more. That the conductor Was Toseatini didn’t ‘seein worth mentioning: Also with Weber’s Der Freischutz Overture played by the London Philharmonic, and Rachinanifioff’s Second Piano Concerto, with the satne orchestra, most people would be giving Sir Thomas Beecham the credit, which belongs to the young Aimeri¢an conductor Erich Leinsdorf. This sort of omission océtifs neatly every day. And one other point: why both in The Listener programmes and over the air, is the Philharmonia Ofchestra referred t6 as the Philhatmonic? One enterprisifg announcer once called it the Lohdon Philharmonic! s LARRY PRUDEN (New Plymouth). The Listener uses the name that cottectly identifies the. orchestra-sometimes Philhdrn
monia; sometimes Philharmonic-Ed, )
