Noel Coward On the Air
STORIES behind some of Noel Coward’s best-known songs and reminiscences about the circumstances under which they were written and first performed make up The Noel «Coward Programme which the ZB stations and 2ZA will present to listeners shortly. The. actor, composer, playwright and producer, who was in New Zealand during the last war years has, we are told, written every word and note for this series of 13 half-hour episodes. | Coward, now 49 years old, will look back on 25 years of the show business, and his programme, while including satirical revue items like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," will also introduce popular melodies from such of his shows as Bitter Sweet, Conversation Piece and Operette. Many of the items will also come from recent shows like Pacific 1860 and Sigh No More. . Assisting the sophisticated author (seen above at a recording session) will be a company of performers, including Graham Payn, Joyce Grenfell ‘and Victoria Campbell, along with Mantovani and his Orchestra. Coward himself will contribute at least one item to each episode, and ‘he is so prolific a producer of entertainment that there is bound to be something pleasing to every listener’s taste. The Noel Coward Programme will open on Sunday, May 16, at 2ZB and 4ZB, at 7.0 p.m.; at 2ZA on Sunday, August 8, at 7.0 p.m.; at 3ZB on Sunday, August 15, at 7.30 p.m., and at 1ZB on Sunday, August 22, at 7.0 p.m.
