Prokofieff's New Opera
WV AR AND PEACE, Prokofieff’s opera, is to have its first performance outside Russia at the Metropolitan Opera, after overcoming what seemed at the time insurmountable difficulties. Prokofieff first demanded prohibitive royalties, then would not agree to any cuts’ in the score, which takes two consecutive nights to perform. After coming to a satisactory financial arrangement, the composer yielded to requests for drastic cuts. The Metropolitan will now give the opera in a condensed form of about four hours’ duration.
