As Who Likes It?
N a new series, Musical Theatre of the Air, which will consist of specially written plays by well-known authors as well as radio adaptations of stage or film classics, the BBC proposes to include a modern musical-comedy version of Shakespeare’s As You Like It (states the ABC journal Talk). In it the Forest of Arden becomes the Ardennes; Touchstone becomes Touchy, a cockney chauffeur; Rosalind, faced with the problem of impersonating a boy, sings a song about "I gotta get down among the bass"; the melancholy Jacques becomes a dour Scot known as the "melancholy Jock," who plays the bagpipes at every conceivable opportunity; and the entire action opens with a racketing, rip-roar-ing, running commentary on an all-in wrestling match between Orlando the Golden Boy and Charlie the Chucker.
