FACTS AND STATISTICS
SS egies. ‘em some figures! They can’t explain them away!" In the next four weeks, starting on Tuesday, August 27, Winter Course talk speakers from 4YA will tell us something about the nature of figures in a series intriguingly titled Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics. The first talk, "What Luck, the Laws of Chance," will be given by Dr. Harold Silverstone, M.A., Ph.D., assistant lecturer in mathematics at the University of Otago. Bridge-players will be interested in this talk, for Dr. Silverstone will estimate the statistical probability of the recent extraordinary hand dealt in four suits at the Dunedin Bridge Club. He will give a further talk on Tuesday, September 3, entitled "Statistics Come of
Age," in which he will trace the genesis and development of statistical method. Especiaily since the United States Army introduced group intelligence testing in the first World War, a great deal of interest has been shown in the statistical measurement of the human mind. On Tuesday, September 10, G. W. Parkyn, M.A., lecturer in education at the University 'of Otago, will discuss the techniques involved in this work. The last talk in the series, on Tuesday, September 17, will be by J. Williams, M.Com., research lecturer in industrial organisation at the University of Otago. He will summarise the important position held by statistics in relation to modern industry, economics, agriculture and other fields. ;
