"Triumph of Neptune"

‘Two interesting modern works were heard on a recent Sunday from 4YA,. The first, The Triumph of Neptune, the ballet suite by Lord Berners, would be an excellent work with which to initiate a layman into modern music. Not at all difficult to understand, this vivaciously clever music is clear-cut in style and structure, basically rhythmic,

as effective ballet-music should be, and contains, although in a’ less bitingly satiric manner, much the same sort of humour as Walton’s Facade. That delightful book, A Distant Prospect, in which Lord Berners recollects in tranquillity the emotions of his Eton days, proclaims an enthusiastic and precocious juvenile predeliction for the dramas of Wagner. Thank heaven, no such ponderous musical ambition inspites the Neptune music, which -is as light and airily fantastic as the terpsichorean characters whom it epitomises.
