SHAKESPEARE IN SCHOOL
Sir,-It is good to know what the Wellington Thespians are doing for the schools by providing them with stage presentations of Shakespeare. In October of last year the Epsom Girls’ Grammar School and the Auckland Boys’ Grammar School combined in a presentation of The Merchant of Venice staged at His Majesty’s Theatre for a season of three nights. The season was a complete success, a full house on each occasion. Parties of pupils from other schools also viewed the performance but, unfortunately, all could not be accommodated who wished to attend. The combining of the two schools in a production of this kind was an interesting experiment that
paid handsomely; enthusiasm has been running high ever since and it has been decided to use the same combination in staging As You Like It in October of this year.
