Love Locked Out
MONG Chopin’s many charming pieces are one or two compositions that are great music. The Fantasie Polonaise in A Flat Major, played by Sidney Strang from 1YA, is one of them. This Fantasie-the Polonaise part refers more to its spiritual origin than to any actual dance rhythm contained in the music-has Chopin’s customary qualities, his waqaving of tonal moods, the nostalgia of the exile and also the vigour of the peasant. But it has less empty space than one finds in much of his music, its canvas is filled with a strange exoticism, there is a spirit-lifting surge about its rhythms. Sidney Strang had courage in playing Fantasie Polonaise. She brought to the music a sensitive approach and matched its vigour with her own. But the key of ‘imagination unlocking the music’s inner secrets was missing. We stood outside, player and listener, hearing but the echoes.
