GERSHWIN AND "JAZZ"
Sir,-Although G.M. is generally right in his film reviews, he made a bad blunder when stating in his notice of Rhapsody in Blue that Gershwin was "already worshipped as the unrivalled exponent of le hot jazz." Gershwin never was remotely connected with le jazz hot except that his music was mostly in fourfour time. There the resemblance ends, for by no stretch of the imagination can any of his works be classed as jazz. G.M. is quite correct when he stated that Robert Alda did not play the notes heard on the sound track of the film. Oscar Levant, apart from his own solos, also recorded the featured solos. attributed to Alda. Incidentally Alda had practically no knowledge of the Piano when he started to work on. the picture. The extraordinary job of synchronisation is the result of his hours of work and practice, usually after the day’s shoot: ing, under the expert coaching of Victor Allet of the Warner music staff. _ Nor is Alda the only person "faking" in this film, Vocal double for dancer Joan Leslie was radio singer Sally Sweet.
