Builders of THE FIRST GOLDFIELD New Zealand While traces of gold had been found earlier in other parts of the country, the first goldfield to be worked in New Zealand was near Coromandel in 1852. A FURTHER important goldfield was discovered at Gabriel?s Gully, Otago, in 1861.
