CHEQUE for £170 was recently presented by Captain O. W) Todd, jun., of the U.S. Marine Corps, to Sister Claire, at the Convent of the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary, Wellington. It represented the proceeds of a concert given by a party of Marines to help the 13 Sisters of the Order who escaped from the Solomons when the Japanese over-ran the islands, and who came to this country by U.S. submarine and surface craft. Most of the sisters are American-born; some are French, and some English. Sister Claire is the pioneer sister, and has served the Order in the Solomons for 42 years, Before they left the islands, some of the nursing sisters had cared for sick and wounded Marines. i The photograph shows Captain Todd handing the cheque to Sister Claire. On the left is Mrs. D. P. Phillips, who first made known the great need of the sisters; on the right is Vincent Ward, secretary of the Patriotic Council; ‘and in the centre is K. W. Kilpatrick, of the CBS staff, who assisted in the preliminary arrangements for the concert, which was one of the regular 2ZB Radio Theatre Shows.
