HOSE who have read and liked | Georgette Heyer’s novel These Old Shades will welcome the radio adaptation of the story which is to succeed Doctor Mac trom the Commercial stations at 9.0 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The adaptation is by Eric Scott and the producer is George Edwards, who also plays the principal part of the Duke of Avon. Nell Stirling, well kno. 2 to radio listeners, who in private life is Mrs. .George Edwards, plays the part of Leonie, the girl who, dressed as a page boyy enters the Duke of Avon’s househo.d. Ailsa Grahame, who acted last year in a London production of Quiet Wedding, plays Lady Fanny Marling. These Old Shades will begin at Station 1ZB and 3ZB on Thursday, May 20, and at 2ZB and 4ZB on Thursday, May 27, and at 2ZA on Thursday, June 3. * * * EDNESDAY at 1.30 p.m. is Community Sing time at 1ZB. Even in the hot weather the numbers did not fall off: in fact this branch of the Happiness Club’s activity conducted by Dudley Wrathall and Reg. Morgan,
assisted by Eric Bell at the Novachord and Thea Ryan at the piano, fills 1ZB Radio Theatre to capacity. The appearance of Lou Paul at the microphone during ea recent session was a welcome surprise. * * RECENTLY the U.S. Marine Band gave a concert for the Radio Theatre Show. This raised £200 for the National Patriotic Funds. Recordings were made during the concert for three programme, which will shortly be heard from all Commercial stations. The band, conducted by Marine Gunner Gus Olaguez, played a variety of numbers, ranging from Schubert to Gilbert and Sullivan and modern popular numbers x * * g: [DOWNBEAT" is the title of a new U.S. War Department programme which will shortly be heard from all Commercial stations. "Downbeat" is also the title of a famous American dance band magazine, and this magazine has helped to arrange this programme. which will include such notable bands as those of Freddie Martin, Harry James, Johnny Long, Jan Savitt, Guy Lombardo, Joe Reichman and Kay Kyser and Ray McKinley. It will not only be a programme of the latest swing music, but it will also tell the history of each of these bands and of some of the players. * * RECENT "come back" to the microphone was Mark Tozer, former copywriter and production supervisor at 2ZB. This Saturday, May 15, he will be featured in a ukelele and piano recital from 2ZA, and his 14-year-old daughter will also take part in the performance.
