0000 HOURS
Sir,-I expect there are other people besides myself who would be interested to know why the time is being announced in this extraordinary way. I notice, too, that 8 o’clock p.m. in New Zealand is 2000, and the same time in England is 0000. A few words of explanation would be appreciated.
PUZZLED
(Christchurch).
{The practice of announcing the time from the National stations on the basis of the 12hour and the 24-hour clock was instituted at the request of the Chiefs of the Armed Forces, in order to familiarise the public with the method of time calculation on the 24-hour clock. Our correspondent is under some misapprehension regarding’ the relative times in England and New Zealand. Eight p.m. New Zealand (that is 2000 hours), is 8 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time in England (that is, 0800 hours ).-Ed.].
