TUNE DETECTIVE
FUN WITH MUSIC. By Sigmund Spaeth. Charles Begg and Co., Wellington. 2/6. R. SPAETH is the Sherlock Holmes among "Tune Detectives." Give him a popular song like "The Sidewalks of New York" and he would probably trace its theme to the opening bars of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet. But he is never pretentious or solemn, nor is his book for highbrows. It is written primarily for people with simple tastes who enjoy music but know nothing of its technique, "Fun with Music" is not a substitute for a good teacher, nor does it claim to be. It deals in fact only with the rudiments of music, but it does so stimulatingly, and with a skill rarely found in books of this kind. For that reason, it should have a wide circulation in this country. It includes also a useful dictionary of musical terms, biographical notes on composers, and the words of 40 community songs.
