STEVENSON ALWAYS SCANNED

Sir,-While fully concurring in Mr. Singer’s estimate of the art of Robert Louis Stevenson (2ZB, August 23) I was surprised to hear him fall with great care and deliberation into the fairly obvious trap in " Requiem." Nine people out of ten insert "the" in the third line of the second verse, making it read Home is the sailor, home from the sea. Yet no student of Stevenson would lay such faulty scansion at his door. The correct version is Home is the sailor, home from sea. Still, Mr, Singer is in good company, for the stonemason who cut the inscription on the tomb on Mount Vaea made the same mistake,

MANUIA

(Wellington).
