Items From The ZB's

HE many ZB listeners who have signed their birthday greetings to Jane Ace of Easy Aces fame, will be interested to see this photograph of the Birthday Book which is being sent to America for her birthday next October. There are signatures from her

admirers in all parts of the Dominion. This book is handsomely bound in blue leather with the lettering and the ZB monogram on the cover in gold, On the title page is an inscription that this is "A birthday tribute from radio friends in New Zealand where Easy Aces is one of the most popular programmes broadcast by the stations of the CBS." Interspersed with the signatures and goodwill messages are photographs of views and cities in New Zealand, and even one of Aunt Daisy with the Quadruplets in Dunedin. BS Bs a SESSION that has proved very popular in Dunedin is the Mock. Court which, conducted twice weekly, has been responsible for collecting some hundreds of pounds in the recent All Peoples’ Queen Carnival. The Mock Court made up for any lack of dignity with its spontaneous humour and ready wit as well as with a record turnover in fines. The public acted as jury, and perhaps the major factor in the court’s success so far has been that the defending counsel has not won a single case! Although the Queen Carnival is ended the Mock Court is continuing its work of raising patriotic funds. (See photogétaph on page 17.) a ES Es STATION 3ZB has suffered, as have so many organisations, in the recent casualty lists. First came the news that the ‘announcer, Ken Waterhouse, was posted missing, and then that two of the women on the staff had lost their husbands. Major Phillip Levy, the husband of " Phillipa,’ who conducts the Health and Beauty session, was reported recently to have died of wounds. Mrs. Shand, of the station’s sales staff, also heard recently that her husband had been killed in action. Ea ES * ISTEN to any group of men and women having a discussion, and you are bound to hear some interesting variations in pronunciation, in spite of the

fact every individual is sure he knows as much about it as anyone else, Nevertheless the half-dozen men and women who tackled Pronunciation Jackpots from 4ZB on a recent Monday evening soon found that what is good enough for everyday speech isn’t good enough for Jessie McLennan, the " Quiz-Mistress " of this session. The use of a woman announcer for a studio session is a new departure for 4ZB but one which might be justified on the ground that, since women are reputed to do most of the talking, they should be in the position of deciding how we'll talk.
