EN LOW, who recently joined the announcing staff of 3ZB and whose picture appears on the this page, was born in Dunedin and educated at Waitaki Boys’ High School. He was in a bank in Dunedin for some time and played football for " Pirates" and cricket for Grange. He also took part in field and track athletics, being trained by his uncle, the late W. A. Low, the Australian champion half-miler. While living in Christchurch, Ken became interested in the stage, joined up with the Christchurch Repertory Society, and eventually left his bank and became manager of the New Zealand Recording Studios, where he conducted _ special classes in radio acting. ICTUREGOERS with long memories may recall a fantastic adventure in China starring Gary Cooper and Akim Tamiroff entitled The General Died at Dawn. For some, the picture was particularly interesting because it marked the Hollywood debut of Clifford Odets, a young Broadway playwright who wrote the scenario and also played a very small part. Now The General Died at Dawn has been adapted for radio, complete with mysterious deaths on Chinese junks, wild adventures in Shanghai, e love interest, and, of course, a Chinese general who dies at dawn. The serial has already started at 4ZB and 3ZB, and starts at 2ZB on June 23, 1ZB June 30, and 2ZA on July 14. It replaces the Bob Dyer feature You Ain’t Heard Nothin’ Yet, and will be heard every Tuesday and Thursdayrat 8.0 p.m. ILLIAM FARNUM, one of the most famous stars of silent films (Julius Caesar, Connecticut Yankee, Madame Dubarry, The Spoilers, and Les Miserables) stars now in a radio serial. Its title is "The Adventures of Uncle Jimmie," and it starts from 2ZB this Thursday, June 18, from 1ZB on June 25, 3ZB July 2, 4ZB July 9, and from 2ZA on August 3. It plays every weekday morning from Tuesday through to Friday at 10.0 a.m. "The Adventures of Uncle Jimmie" is the story of a typical middle-class family which is faced with a series of crises through the waywardness of a 19-year-old son who considers he is old enough to leave home and set up an apartment for himself. Into the collective life of this family comes an old stranger who is knocked down by impetuous son Bobby’s car in the first instance, and who'eventually becomes a member of, the family. "The Adventures of Uncle Jimmie" was produced by Warner Brothers Broadcasting Corporation, an offshoot of the big film studios, Although practically retired from films, Farnum is occasionally seen in "bit" parts. One of his most recent appearances was in A Woman’s Face with Joan Crawford.
