Grenadier Guards, "Sousa Marches On" When Offenbach paid a visit to the ‘United States, one of the violinists in his orchestra was a young man of 21 whose name was to become a household word all over the civilised world. This was John Philip Sousa. He was not much older when he was appointed leader of the band of
the United States Marines Corps. After twelve years’ hard work, he resigned and organised his own band. Though known best as a conductor, he was a composer of energetic and buoyant band music, as well as ten operas.
