The play, which was a very bad one, scarcely survived the first performance, but the musical numbers of the ballet and the Entr’acte are very nearly the most popular of all Schubert’s orchestral pieces. This music, by the way, was mislaid for forty years after Schubert’s death, and very nearly lost altogether.
