T is a minor musical phenomenon that however hackneyed and banal the popular tunes of Tin Pan Alley may become, melodies such as "Liebestraume," "Star of Eve," " Toselli’s Serenade," and " Rubinstein’s Melody in F," never stale. Station 4ZB now has a session " Melodies That Linger," which is made up of recordings of many immortal classics. It is heard on Mondays at 8.30 p.m. * * ALMERSTON NORTH listeners who like to hear the pros and cons of controversial subjects are now catered for by a "Debating Club of the Air," a new programme from station 2ZA. This is the first time in the history of broadcasting in the Dominion that such a programme has been regularly presented, and while some of the subjects — "Should Women Use Cosmetics?" "Does the Present System of Education Prepare the Pupil for Life?"-have been debated many times before, the club provides some lively discussion, * %* * HE biggest and most important boxing match ever held in New Zealand (though "fight fans" who remember the Sarron-Donovan fight may dispute the claim) will be the Strickland"Alabama Kid" match which will be held at Palmerston North on Boxing Day. It will: be a big day, too, for station 2ZA of Palmerston North, for this station has secured New Zealand broadcasting rights for the match. | Bs Es * "T HE juvenile radio talent quest which | Station 2ZB is conducting has already produced a remarkable array of talent, and interest is quickening as the quest moves on to the second semifinal, which will be held on Friday, December 6. A further semi-final will be held some time in January, and later an attempt will be made to decide who is the most talented youngster of all who have appeared before the microphone during the quest. * * * HRISTCHURCH children have recently had an opportunity of trying their hand at writing plays for radio, and "Wise Owl," who organised a competition among his junior listeners, is said to be very pleased with the results, The winning entries will be broadcast on Tuesdays and Thursday at 5.15 p.m, during the next four weeks. The first, "The Adventure in the Bush," written by Dennis McEldowney, aged 14 years, was heard on Tuesday. % Bs * PRODUCTION of a series of "Real Life Stories," which Bryan O’Brien is undertaking for the CBS, is well in hand, and the first programme will be on the air in the near future. "Love at First Sight" is the title of one which was recorded recently. The players include Miss Leslie Jackson, who is well known in repertory circles in Wellington; Don Priestley, who is a member of both the Repertory and Thespian Societies, N. V. Wottan, and Miss M. Harding-Maltby. "Love at First Sight" is a simple little story of two young people who meet and fall in love at a coffee-stall,
