LESSONS IN MORSE
(3) Holding The Key Again The following is a draft of signalling lesson No. 8 broadcast from Stations 2YC, 1ZM, and 3YL at 10 p.m. on October 28, 29 and 30. ; EFORE starting with the receiving practice, the Instructor briefly dealt with the correct method of holding the key. His remarks were as follow: While in a comfortable sitting position and using the right hand, let the thumb rest lightly under the knob of the key and place the tips of the first and secoud fingers on the key knob. Don’t grip the key, just exert sufficient pressure to prevent the fingers from slipping. ; The forearm to the point of the elbow should be in line with and on the same level as the lever of the key. The w arm should be fairly close to the side of the body. The back of the hand should be in a position to allow of an unrestricted vertical movement of the wrist.
It should be remembered that in order to ensure that the arm muscles are in a relaxed position a light key grip must be employed. It was intimated by the Instructor that, if possible, trainees should practice sending for at least 15 minutes daily. The rest of the lesson was taken up in receiving, practice being given in jumbled letters, figures and plain language.
