Bach "Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring" Bach 8.20 London Symphony Orchestra: Conductor, Sir Henry Wood Symphony No. 45 ("Farewell") in F Sharp Minor Haydn When Haydn directed the music in the household of the princely family of Esterhazy, the members of his orchestra found it meant for most of them enforced exile from their own homes and families. Only one or two were able to bring their wives and families to the palace, which was situated in the country. That was the real origin of the ‘" Farewell" Symphony. At its first performance, as the music neared its end, the players rose up, one by one, and each in turn blew out the candle on his desk, and stole on tiptoe from the room, until the very last notes were played only by two violins. This broad hint that it was time the players were allowed to go home to see their families so amused the Prince, that he acted on it in the right spirit. 8.45 Reserved 9.0 Daventry news 9.10 Dominion and dtstrict weather reports and station notices * 9.145 "A Children’s Overture" Quilter 9.34 Yehudi Menuhin (violinist), and the London Symphony Orchestra. He entrusts the care of his wife and the reins of government to his dissolute brother. Prince Galitsky, who secretly desires to usurp the throne. After Prince Igor’s departure, Prince Galitsky encourages the’ population of Poutivle to indulge in
drunken orgies. At the height of the festivities, word is brought that Prince Igor and his son Viadimer, have been taken captive in battle, and that the Polovetzky are about to attack the town. Meanwhile, in the camp of the Polovetzky, Viadimer, much to Prince Igor’s sorrow, has fallen in love with the Polovetzky chief’s daughter Kontchakovna. Later, the victorious Polovetzky army return from sacking Poutivle, and celebrate the occasion by feasting and dancing. Prince Igor makes a desperate
