WHO IS HE?-Born at Athlone, Ireland, on June 14, 1884, he first came into prominence by winning, at the age of 18, while still an untrained singer, the Denza Gold Medal at the National Irish Festival, and a year later he made his first public appearance as a professional singer in Dublin. Like many another Irishmpn, he went to London in 1904 to fry his luck. At first he had a thin time, and many an evening he sang at dinmers in Soho restaurants for a guinea a time. Eventually, he saved enough to go to Italy to study seriously, returning three years afterwards 4, finished opera singer ready for Covent Garden. _
