Elgar’s ‘"‘’Cello Concerto "’ is a work of haunting musical beauty and from the tech‘nical and interpretative points of view one of the finest, if not tWe finest, ever written for this much neglected instrument. It was composed at the end of the period that Elgar spent at Brinkwells, Fittleworth, in Sussex, and although he lived another fifteen years this was actually the last of his big works. 7.45 Selected recordings (approx.) 8.0 "MUSIC FROM THE THEATRE" " TURANDOT," Puccini’s last Grand Opera A lyric drama of Old China, The action takes place in Peking in legendary times Turandot, in Peking, is a coldly beautiful Frincess and offers to marry anyone who can answer three questions: she asks, If unsuccessful the young man must lose.his head. A young "Persian is about to be executed when the unidentified Prince Calaf comes into the square and recognises in the crowd his father, an exiled Tartar King. Timur, the father, has been attended in his wanderings by a servant girl named Liu, because she once fell in love with his son, Calaf. The three wanderers, now reunited, witness the exécution of the young Persian. Nothing daunted, Calaf, who is overcome by Turandot’s beauty, shouts that he will try to answer the three questions, and to the dismay of the Princess does so Successfully. She then wishes to go back on her bargain, but her father, -The Emperor, insists that she marry Calaf, Calaf relents, and tells her that he will not insist upon this marriage if she "can learn his identity before dawn. Overjoyed, Turandot gives an order that everyone must spend the night learning his name, and anyone found sleeping will be executed. Liu is put to the torture, and rather than tell, she stabs herself. Finally Calaf himself reveals the truth.
