WHO IS HE?-He is an autocrat and one of our best conductors. Born at Palma in 1867, he made his debut at the age of eighteen as an orchestral ‘cellist. His powers as a conductor were soon recognised and he steadily mounted the ladder of fame. Among many other important works he gave the first performances of Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" and "La Boheme," Strauss’s "Salome," and Dubussy’s "Pelleas and Melisande." In 1927 he was appointed principal conductor of the New York Pilharmonic Symphony Orchestra. He once rébuked Caruso for unpunctuality and advised him not to be late again. He carries in his head every score he ever con-ducts-his memory is phenornenal.
