JAM IN N.A.?
The Senior Radio Inspector in Brisbane has been asked to investigate a complaint from a radio listener at El Arish, in North Queensland, that interference consistently occurs with his reception during the broadcast from a local station 150 miles away of the sponsored feature, "The Radio That Hitler Fears." In a letter to 4AY, Ayr, on January 2, a listener wrote: — "T would like to draw your attention to a thing which has got me puzzled. " .. . 1 am very interested in ‘The Radio That Hitler Fears,’ but so far I have only been able to get this reception once clearly. Before it comes on the air my wireless is going nicely (the signal is), clear and no static at all. As soon as this programme comes on, everything goes wrong; all the noises in the world start, it sounds like static, but as soon as the programme is finished and the next item starts every-
thing is clear again . . . It seems to me as if someone deliberately interferes with this broadcast . . . I may state it is impossible to get this broadcast at all, as you cannot understand one word for the noise that is going on." Well, there it is. A hoax? Or a clue to the activities of some Nazi sympathisers in Australia. There is an intense foreign population in Northern Queensland, and it is not beyond the realm of possibility that someone up there is in possession of equipment which is capable of jamming a broadcast. On the less sinister side it must be admitted that periodical interference such as described by the listener could be caused by any one of a number of innocent factors. — From "Commercial Broadcasting" (Australia). SINGLE When Reg (Krash King) Kavanagh was in America not so long ago he met a lovely lady to whom he just had to become engaged. He was talking about his experiences to The Listener
when he showed us her very attractive photograph. Modern terminology did the test, and in our last issue we said Mr. Kavanagh was married. He’s not. Not yet. BUSMAN How should the commander of an ocean greyhound spend his annual leave? In the garden? Riding on trains? Lying in the sun on solid earth? Walking along tree-shaded paths? Perhaps, but there’s one on leave now from the fastest ship in Australian and New Zealand waters, and he’s doing none of these things. He’s yachting. And when he was asking the skipper of the yacht what equipment was available for the use of a mere deck hand, the assembled company, according to report, simply rolled into the scuppers at an innocent remark that the little ship had no whistle.
