SWIMMERS ENTERTAIN FROM 4ZB

Centennial Event at Dunedin

UNEDIN recently had the honour of staging the Intermediate and Junior Swimming Championships, the only Centennial sporting fixture that will be held in the South this year, and the Otago Swimming Centre rose to the occasion in magnificent style. The fixture was a huge success, and, as usual, 4ZB was to the fore. First of all, a studio welcome was given to the Bay of Plenty team, then the joint holders with Otago of the War Memorial Shield. Bernie McConnell did the honours, and after suitable replies from A. F. Moncur, M.P. for Rotorua, manager of the team, and W. A. Jenkins, president of the Otago Swimming Centre, a short but enjoyable programme was _ presented by some of the swimmers.

Miss Joy McDonald, the representative from South Auckland, sang "A Heart That Is Free," proving she could get on to high notes with the same ease as she displays on the high board. Martin Loffley and Ben Morrison, Maori swimming stars of the Bay of Plenty team, proved themselves entertaining vocalists also. Incidentally, these talented lads, with the assistance of Airini of 4ZB, were responsible for an interesting "Maori Cameo" presented one night in the Children’s Session. Although the Bay of Plenty team did not regain the War Memorial Shield, they certainly gained many friends-in Dunedin, both through their efforts in the baths and over the air,
