NICKNAMES
A more-than-ordinarily rotund little schoolboy is sure to be called "Tubby," and these days Londoners call anyone who behaves aggressively " Hitler." Which all goes to show that nicknames are universally applied, and are shunned neither in_ scholastic, domestic, nor political circles. They play.a part even in music. For example, in this week’s programmes are to be found several nicknamed compositions. Benno Moiseiwitsch and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, under Georg Szell, will present " The Emperor" concerto by Beethoven at 7.44 p.m. on Monday, February 12, from 3ZR, Greymouth. It is not known who dubbed this work (written in 1809) "Emperor," but the credit is sometimes given to J. B. Cramer, the pianist and music publisher. It is certain, however, that Beethoven’s Trio in B Flat Major was called " The Archduke" Trio after the Archduke Rudolph, to whom it was dedicated. The trio will be played by Cortot, Thibaud, and Casals, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, from 2YN, Nelson. A friend, admiring Schubert's song, "The Trout," liked it so much that he suggested the composer should write a chamber music work on the subject. The result was "The Trout" Quintet. The fourth movement consists of variations on the song. The first movement is to be heard at 8,23 p.m. on Friday, February 16, from 2YH Napier, played by Artur Schnabel and members of the Pro Arte Quartet.
