BOXING NOTES
When seen in Sydney a few week ago by a visiting Maorilander, Ike Kute ner and Charlie Purdy were looking very fit. As of old, "Ike" is keenly interested in the fight game, and is connected with training activities, but " Peerless Charles" confines himself mostly to his business. * * * Discussing dieting, an old timer recently stated: " The night before a fight I thought nothing of polishing off @ couple of dozen oysters, which I steadied with a grill, and topped off with @ couple of eggs, and coffee. All the same, I wouldn’t advise every boxer to follow my example." * x 3 Les Adams, the Invercargill veteran, who recently retired after nineteen years of boxing, has created a New Zealand record. He started as a bantam-weight in 1920 and finished as a welter’ in 1939. * * * During his career Adams met and defeated many champions, including Neville’ Mudgway, Jack Jarvis, and Vic Caltaux, but it was his misfortune that he never secured a_ professional title. Adams has played a great part in Dominion boxing. * Fa * Those who picked Darcy Heeney of Gisborne to turn professional were mistaken. Present amateur welter-weight champion of New Zealand, Darcy has reached the top as a "Simon pure." So far he has shown no inclination to follow in his father’s footsteps or copy his Uncle Tom. * + * The "Billy Murphy Cup," presented by the A.B.A. for annual competition among the amateurs, was a fitting memorial to a great little fighter. Murphy started his boxing in Auckland, won a world’s title, and returned to the city of his birth to end his days.
