CONTRALTO CHAMPION

Successes In Australia

| YOUNG New Zealand singer who has been attracting considerable in Australia during the past year is Miss Jessie Shaw (contralto), from Kihikihi, Auckland, who has been continuing her musical studies at the State Conservatorium of Music, Sydney. At the recent City of Sydney Eisteddfod, Miss Shaw not only gained the contralto championship, but was also awarded the Open Championship trophy presented by the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Following these successes, she was selected to sing the contralto lead in the Sydney Philharmonic Society’s presentation of "The Messiah" in the Sydney Town Hall recently. Authorities speak very highly of Miss Shaw’s attainments; the rich quality and sweetness of her natural contralto voice has an instant appeal and much notice has been taken of her in musical circles throughout the Commonwealth. Mae Brahe, the Australian song composer, who recently returned from London, speaks most highly of Miss Shaw’s voice and of her future prospects.

Miss Shaw returned to Auckland on Christmas: Day, and listeners will have the opportunity of hearing her from 1YA on January 6 at 8.42 p.m.
