K.C.B., C.B., D.S.O., Commander-in-Chief of the British Home Fleet, is one of the most silent members of the "silent" service, Under the present arrangement between the Allies, he also commands the warships A DMIRAL Sir Charles Forbes,
of the French Navy in the combined effort to stamp out the submarine menace and blockade Germany. Because of his silence, there are few stories about Admiral Forbes, but his career has been distinguished by appointments to important posts. He is a gunnery expert and knows the power of his Fleet’s 1,606 big guns, In pre-war days he was one of the famous Lord Fisher’s pet pupils, which perhaps accounts for his silence. In the battle of Jutland he was Lord Jellicoe’s chief gunnery officer as well as his flag lieutenant, winning his D.S.O. in action, From 1930 to 1931 Admiral Forbes commanded the destroyer flotillas of the Mediterranean Fleet; he was Third Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy from 1932-34; he commanded the First Battle Squadron and was second in command of the Mediterranean Fleet from 1934 to 1936; and last year he took command of the Home Fleet.
