S. P. Andrew, photograph Major-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O. and two bars, mentioned in despatches six times, who has been appointed to command the New Zealand Forces overseas. This appointment has been greeted enthusiastically by soldiers and the public alike, for his reputation in the 1914-18 campaign was Empire wide. General Freyberg, who has lived in England since the last war, became a personal friend of the Asquith family, especially of the Hon. Arthur Asquith, who held the rank of Brigadier-General. When General, Asquith married the Hon. Betty Manners, who was so well known to New Zealand soldiers, General Freyberg was his best man. In 1922 General Freyberg married the widow of the Hon. Francis McLaren, M.P., daughter of Sir Herbert Jekyll, K.C.M.G. They have one son.
