Maori Children’s Choir
the present, during the celebration of New Zealand’s Centennial, to remember the art of the Maoris, especially their singing and the choirs which keep alive the songs of the Maori people. Such a choir is the Hiruharama Native School Choir. The choir, in which Bishop Bennett, the Minister of Education (the Hon. Peter Fraser), and many others have taken an interest, is composed solely of Maori children. There are eleven boys and seventeen girls, their ages ranging from 10 to 16. They have already had experience of concert performances, presenting Maori songs, chants, hakas, and poi dances. They sing also English songs in four parts-such songs as " Silent Night" and "Sleep Holy Babe" translated into Maori-and all their singing is unaccompanied. The choir is coming to Wellington, and will be heard from 2YA Wellington at 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, from the Exhibition Studio.
