He was born at Montreal, Canada, in 1885. When he was sent to Europe for study, he graduated at twelve from the conservatory at Ghent, with highest honours. He received also the first prize for chamber music. He
then toured Europe as a child prodigy. At the age of sixteen he joined the Cincinnatl Orchestra, and in 1904 he became ’cellist in the Philadelphia Orchestra, later taking up conducting with much success, 840 TALK by F. W.
