Ballet ‘ Coppelia,’" by Delibes Recordings: Sir Thomas Beecham, conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra, "The Hebrides Overture" (Fingal’s Cave) .Mendelssohn One summer, when Mendelssohn was twenty, he made a tour of Scotland. There, as he said in a letter home, the islands of the Hebrides affected him profoundly, and hg recorded his impressions by jotting down the first twenty bars or so of what, a year later, was to become this Overture. As a seascape, this tone picture is superb and was immensely admired by Wagner, who considered it to be Mendelssohn’s masterpiece. 8.10 Elizabeth Schumann (soprano) in songs by Schubert, "Near the Beloved," "Laughing and Weeping," "Night and Dreams," " Happiness " 8.18 Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Walter Goehr, "Schubert Waltzes" Schubert 8.26 Vladimir Rosing (tenor), "In the Silent Night," "Spring Waters" ....... Rachmaninoff " Barcarolle" "La Nuit L’Amour," "Les Larmes," " Paques " Rachmaninoff composed the most successful piece of music that ever came out of Russia, by virtue of which the man in the street knows not only his name, but also how to pronounce it; but he has written far finer music than the noise made y, that tin so long tied to his tail. This "Fantasie" for example, is a set of tone pictures, dedicated to Tschaikovskl, and is one of the many proofs of the saying, "How little they know of Rachmaninoff, who only the ‘ Prelude’ know." 8.49 Recordings: Viadimir Rosing (tenor), "Don Juan’s Serenade" Tschaikovski 8.52 Boston Promenade Orche "Marche Slave" . The girl he is to marry turns from him and marries his best friend, and Silas is forced to leave the town, his faith in God and man absolutely Jost. COINCIDENCE! Dial-twiddling in a Christchurch flat the other evening. a listener happened on a weird musical coincidence. A recorded singer at 3YA ended her song on E natural. A dance band started its number at 3ZB immediately atterwards on E. Then a 2YA baritone sounded the E as his first note, and, to cap all, the mantelpiece clock in the flat chimed-on E. The piano in the flat corroborated this musical phenomenon.
