" Alternatives" offering in a crossword may mean that the puzzle has hundreds of possible solutions. A recent check of one crossword discovered 2048 chances. Here is a simple example of likely permutations and combinations, ‘with play on the letters A and O in CAT and COT: CAT CoT COT ORE ORE ARE TEN TEN TEN CAT ARE TEN
