"Variations on a Nursery Tune" .......... Dohnanyi The contemporary. Hungarian. composer, conductor and pianist, Ernst von Dohnanyl, is neither a nationalist nor a modernist inthe special sense of the terms. Rather is he a follower of the German classical school of Brahms, whose influence is. plainly discernible in his. early chamber music. All his music is given real vitality by its notable qualities of lyricism, Strength and Numour. Listeners will detect the last quality especially in the present Variations. The song which he has chosen as the basis of his Variations is a little old French tune, "Ah, Vous Drai-je, Maman," strongly reminiscent of ‘‘ Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." 9.381 Mark Raphael (baritone), "It Was a Lover and His Lasse" ...dccccsceses Quilter "Come Away, Death" Quilter 9.37 The London Symphony Orchestra, "Music from ‘Things to Selena CE Pere ei: 10. 6 CLOSE DOWN IY AUCKLAND | 880k.c. 341m, 6. Founded on Alexandre Dumas’ play "La Dame aux Camelias," known in English as " Camille " Violetta, a courtesan of Paris, is madly loved by Alfredo,a young man from Provence. He persuades her to give up her life in Paris, and retire with him to a country cottage, Here life is full of happiness for them both. But Alfredo’s father seeks Violetta, secretly, and tells her that his son’s life is being ruined because of this liaison, The generous Violetta decides to sacrifice herself for her lover’s sake. Fearing to say good-bye and explain, she leaves the cottage and returns to Paris. She is threatened with consumption and, in order to forget the genuine love she has tasted for so brief a spell, throws herself into the old life of gaiety. Alfredo not knowing the real reason for her desertion, follows her to Paris, and, seeing her at a ball, surrounded by a court of admirers, publicly insults her. Too late, he discovers the unselfish love which has led her to throw away her happiness with him. He finds her dying and a tender reconciliation takes place, 10.30 CLOSE DOWN {approx.) 2 y 840k.c, 357m. 6. Oto8.30 p.m. Selected recordings 8.30 "Concert Hall on the Air" 9. 0 Melody time. Sessions For Women The NBS has introduced some new features into its morning sessions for women. At 2YA " Margaret’s" talks are being given three times a week, and on the other three days there are series by " Kathleen," " Isobel," and "Housekeeper." "Kathleen" interviews some city working girls and finds out how they live and what their tastes are. "Isobel" calls her session " Bits and Pieces,’ and it is what it says-odds and ends of advice and information with .a touch of literature. " Housekeeper" gives household . hints.
