2ZA MUSIC FROM FAR LANDS 6.45 p.m. Wednesdays & Thursdays
ITH special significance at the present time, the solemn and stirring music of " God Defend New Zealand" came over the air in Uncle Scrim’s session last Sunday. It was a new adaptation by Reg. Morgan, who, with Sonia de Finchan, well-known" Wellington soprano, gave a splendid rendering of our national song, accompanied by the 2ZB Male Choir. Joined Up Eliott Lloyd, who until recently has been production supervisor at Station 3ZB, has joined the army. He was formerly a Major in, the Australian military forces, and is» now a Captain in the New Zealand regular forces. Thus the army gains a gallant Captain, but the service loses a very capable member of its staff. Mr. Lloyd has only recently married, and he has endeared himself to hundreds of listeners with his cheery conducting of the Professor Speedee Contest on Thursdays at 9. p.m. The good wishes of his many fans, and of the staff, will go with him as he takes up his new responsibilities. Local Talent Ever since the ZB stations, with the Deanna Durbin quest, declared their policy of fostering local talent, many people have been brought to the microphone with excellent results. 3ZB’s latest venture is the Little Show, a_ short variety programme broadcast on Saturday nights, in which all local talent is used. The producer of the Little Show, Eddie Hegan, has become well known to the Christchurch public for his work with Jack Maybury at the community sings. It might be hard to find anything more snappy or more pleasant, or more humorous than the Little Show. It is variety in miniature, but an amazing amount of work is put into it all the same. Not Ours, Madam One of the. amusing results of the recent broadcasts from Daventry, when the news has been rebroadcast by all stations, was reflected in the query asked by a listener to 2ZB. It would appear that last Saturday week when Daventry was being rebroadcast every hour or so, one dear old lady rang up to enquire who the new announcer was. Naturally the cfficials at 2ZB would have been delighted to lay claim to the BBC announcer, but the enquirer was informed of the true state of affairs. Works of Art The Musical Crossword session at 3ZB was no doubt meant primarily to interest people from the musical viewpoint. It succeeded. But recently, since neatness has been taken into consideration in awarding the prize, many artistic surprises have been visited on the judges. Some competitors have gone to prodigious pains to make their entries works of art. These have excited the admiration
of the whole 3ZB staff. In some of them there was obvious evidence of hours of work. Geoff and Nola, who conduct the Crossword Session, are not unnaturally flattered that their own efforts have brought such pleasing results. New Voices 2ZB’s many listeners have been wondering for the past week or so who owns the two new voices now heard from that station. One of the voices is that of Peter Hutt (formerly of 1ZB), now on transfer to 2ZB. Peter is a genial soul and should soon make many friends with Wellington listeners. The other voice belongs to a newcomer to the service, H. Lambert, who until recently was a commercial pilot and aviation instructor. He has had an interesting career, and during the Great War was a member of the R.N.R., serving on convoys and Qboats. He enlisted at the age of seventeen, and when he was demobilised he was still under nineteen years of age. Old and New Favourites Once again introduced into the 2ZB Children’s session is the " Young New Zealand Radio Journal," and included among the interesting short features arranged for the children’s entertainment
are several features which were very popular with the young folk when the Journal first broadcast. The "Birdman" conducts a_ session once a week, and a new figure, the "Museum Man" also has a session in which he tells the children the interesting history of some of the many important exhibits in the Dominion Museum. May Robson In Radio Film-stars are coming to .tadio in a big way. The latest recruit is the cele-
brated May Robson, a veteran of the stage, a personality of the screen, and now a star of radio. The bonds between Miss Robson and English people in the South Seas are close. She was born in Melbourne, Australia. This fact, in itself, has strongly reacted. upon listeners since they have heard the grand old lady from 1ZB in} "Lady of Millions,’ which is broadcast on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights at 8.45. In this new serial Miss Robson creates another fine character of the type she so deftly played in the film success of a few years ago, " Mother’s Millions." The delightful story of "Lady of Millions " is based on this film, and as a radio play has proved to be a sensational success in America on the country’s biggest networks. Her success in New Zealand will be no less certain, for Miss Robson has long since proved her drawing power. Her role in "Lady of Millions," is being appreciated by all lovers of fine characterisation, for it is played with all the sublety and efficiency: of a veteran artist. Miss Robson’s entry into radio is proof positive of the importance of broadcasting to-day. Reg. Morgan’s New Sessions Reg. Morgan will soon be heard from all ZB stations in two new musical programmes. The first of these is "The Dream Lover," which will start on October 2, and will be broadcast every Monday night at 10 p.m. The second is called "Afternoon Tea Reflections with Reg. Morgan" and will start a day later, being broadcast every Tuesday at 3.39 p.m. Watch for them. , " Dill and Daffydill " Expert clowning, singing in the most modern manner, and short sketches bright with wit, make "Dill & Daffydill" very easy to listen to. Jack Davey and. Jack Lumsdaine, famous Australian radio comedians, have created the characters, "Dill" and " Daffydiil," and their brilliant performance measures up to the best overseas radio comedy standard. The CBS is delighted to announce that it has secured " Dill & Daffydill" for ZB listeners, and this feature is scheduled to begin at 1ZB on October 9, at 2ZB on October 16, at 3ZB on October 30, and at 4ZB on November 6. ' It will be broadcast on Mondays, Tues-* days and Wednesdays at 7.30 p.m., and is bound to prove one of the most popular shows on the air. Glad Tidings » Listeners on a recent morning may have noticed a tone of subdued excitement in the voice of. Phil Shone, breakfast session announcer. The reason? The glad tidings that he was the father of a baby daughter. Looks as if another announcer may have opened her eyes to the world.
