S well as proving very successful in her Home Service Session, Jessie McLennan of 3ZB is showcaster in other ways. With plenty of amateur theatrical experience, she was very well known in Dunedin repertory circles. Her dramatic ability does not go astray in a radio station, and already she has shown her worth in productions in the Children’s Session. Follow The Band Colour, movement, marching feet — you often seem to see a procession when you hear a band playing, even if it’s only playing over the radio in. your own sitting-room. _The Band Sessions from ZB Stations are tops on the*air. Every Sunday morning over all ~"ZB- Stations the martial music plays. In Christchurch the show is a flesh-and-blood one. The bands come from far and near to vie with each other. The result is interesting éntertainment and general encourage‘ment for New Zealand Bands. The Band Associations greatly appreciate the ses+ sions, and the sessions benefit tremendously from their interest. And bands need all the encouragement they can get just now with the Centennial Exhibition at hand, and opposition coming from overseas in the shape of the Band of His’ Majesty’s Welsh Guards! Bedtime Music A popular session by Alex McDowell, whose picture is seen on this page, is "Musical Soliloquy," heard from 4ZB every Sunday evening at 10.30. The session "Consists of a pro gramme of reflective, music and poetry, adroitly woven together to provide a string of lightly-threaded moods or tone pictures. As random thoughts flit through the mind, so" in the Musical Soliloquy the mood changes in harmony with the music and poetry. Coming at a time when the thoughts of the majority of listeners are turning towards bed, the soothing effect of the Soliloquy is a fitting finale to the day’s listening. And don’t you think his picture indicates a soothing voice? Morning Reflections If there’s one person on the air inundated with friends and letters, it’s Elsie K. Morton. As you know, she conducts the Morning Reflections Session from ZB Stations every Saturday morning at 10.15. It must be the friendly, confiding quality of -her voice. She certainly gives a very clear impression of a cheerful personality, sincerely interested in. humanity. Some people have been missing her lately because of some slight confusion in the programmes listed, and we must assure all those
anxious fans who have written in about it that Elsie K. Morton is definitely on the air every Saturday at 10.15 from all ZB Stations.
Mary of Scotland Outstanding in its casting, technical arrangements, and story, was the first portion of "The Life of Mary, Queen of Scots," which is being broadcast by the stations of the Commercial Broadcasting Service, and is at present fea-
tured in the Sunday evening programmes from 1ZB. Such characters as the gentle Queen of Scots and her cousin, Elizabeth of England, and the bluff Earl of Moray, come to life as we listen. Brilliant script-writing and narration is found in each scene, and well-chosen effects make every detail obvious. The C. P. McGregor Studios produced this play as portion of their great "Cavalcade of Drama." Arthur Collyns Came Back The other afternoon, at a quarter to two, an old friend of 2ZB listeners appeared from nowhere, and had a lot of interesting things to say about the association of music and human ills, Arthur Collyns, down from Auckland for a brief visit, made a welcome reappearance at 2ZB’s microphone. When 2ZB first opened, Arthur had a most popular session between four and five in the afternoon; and the session entitled " Between Ourselves" was continued at 1ZB Auckland. And it developed, too-to such an extent that Arthur had many extraordinary and interesting problems sent him for solution. He had the services of a well known legal authority and also the help of a leading medical man in Auckland for a lot of his cases. Last Thursday from 2ZB Arthur spoke for a quarter-of-an-hour on the healing power of music. Although most of us have a vague idea about the effect produced by different types of music, Arthur Collyns has made a study of it, and he demonstrated most interestingly how exact a science it can be
