95 "MUSIC FROM THE THEATRE" "Cavalleria Rusticana " Mascagni When * Cavalleria Rusticana" was first produced, the world of music was described as having ‘ Mascagnitis." The reception in every land was wildly enthusiastic and this one-act opera won the first prize of 2,000 francs in a competition organised by the music publishing house of Sonzogno. It is quite straight-forward and orthodox in material and design, and probably tle easiest of the composer’s later symphonies to understand at first hearing. The music represents.
