PUSSY WILLOW

By

Mary C.

Hall

Here is another poem from "Down the Pixie Path," the fairy story which was broadcast from all the YA stations a few months ago. This poem, too, has appeared in the "Sydney Morning Herald."

All the little pussy-willows Wear the softest furry coats, Wear a bunch of silver whiskers Just above their baby throats. They all live with Mother Willow In the garden where I play, But I never see them playing Though I watch them every day. In the silver light of morning, Through the sleepy spring-time sun, Mother Willow rocks her babies, And I’m sure they think it tun.

But they only flick their whiskers, And they never even peep. All day long the woolly pussies Curl up tightly, fast asleep. So I chose a silver evening That was soft and white with dew, And I crept out of the window, Which I knew I shouldn't do. Right across the sleeping garden, Where a tiny breeze was stirring. Then I caught them, yes, I heard them, All the pussy willows purring!
