Melba Scholarship for Women’s Voices

TATION 2YA will help the Mayor (T. C. A. Hislop) and the Wellington Competitions Society inaugurate, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, the event of the year for musical amateurs in New Zealand. Items te be presented on the opening night have not yet been decided, but " The Listener" is able to announce that the local and national finals for the Dame Nellie Melba Bequest Scholarship will also be broadcast. When Dame Melba left £8,000 for the artistic encouragement of "another Melba," she arranged for its administration by the Melbourne Conservatorium, which controlls the two-year £300-a-year scholarships the gift» makes possible. It may be extended to

three years. Miss Jean Love, the present holder of the Scholarship, has a third year, and may be sent to the Continent after her third term. So that entrants will not have to travel long distances a system of elmination contest has grown up. The Wellington Competitions Society will hold its finals on the night of Saturday, August 26, and finalists from other provinces will sing on the night of Thursday, August 31. Only women’s voices are acceptable and the judges look for possibilities as much as for existing technique. The test competition for a radio voice, arranged in conjunction with the NBS, will be held and broadcast on Friday, September 1.
