AUCKLAND KENNEL CLUB’S ANNUAL SHOW.

The annual show in connection with the Auckland Kennel Club was held at the Agricultural Hall last Friday and Saturday and proved one of the most successful exhibitions ever held under the auspices of the Club. The exhibits were strong, both in quantity and quality, the sporting sections, notably the greyhound class, being well represented. The management of the Show was carried out by a strong committee, consisting of the following gentlemen : —Messrs A. 11. Cotter, J. Gallagher, T. Shewring, G. R. Hutchinson, F. W. Edwards, and R. J. Parry, and the details of the meeting were capably supervised by the secretary, Mr C. F. Mark, who worked hard to ensure the success of the gathering. The cup presented to the best dog in the Show was carried off by Mr W. Pennycook’s greyhound bitch, Jeannie Deans (by Kangaroo from Roe), a beautiful specimen of her class. The collie class was worthily represented, the open class and special prize taker, Luath 111. (by Young England), commanding general admiration. The judging was carried out with satisfaction to exhibitors by Mr J. A. Coupe, whose notes on the Show are as follows : — Possibly there were not quite so many entries as last year, but the immense advance in quality generally more than compensated for the 20 or 30 short entries, and there is little doubt the club has succeeded in improving the breeds of dogs in the district, which should be, and I believe is, the main object. To attempt to select any particular individual or individuals as specialties would be invidious, as all worked with a will, and were always ready with “ the long, long pull and the strong", strong pull ” that never fails to bring success. Yet there are always in the working of institutions like these certain parties upon whose shoulders the heaviest burdens must fall, and in this case I cannot help specially mentioning the chairman, Mr Phillips, the secretary, Mr C. F. Mark, Mr F. W. Edwards, Mr G. R. Hutchinson, Charlie Phillips, and R. J. Parry, as most energetic, whilst Mr J. O. Evett, the respected vet., who also acted as ring steward, did yeoman service. Many others, whom I hope will excuse me omitting their names, did everything they could to make my duties as judge as light as possible, at the same time showing every consideration for exhibitors. Summing all up, I can safely say I never had a more businesslike and considerate lot of fanciers to deal with, and there is little doubt the Club has a prosperous future before it. I shall expect to see the Auckland Kennel Club grow by leaps and bounds until it takes the lead in the New Zealand fancy. Coming to the exhibits, I will endeavour in a few words to point put where superiority existed and where there was, on the contrary, large room for improvement. The best classes were without doubt, the greyhounds and collies. Several exhibits in the former would be hard to beat anywhere in the world. As the Yankee would say, this is a “ big order,” but I have no hesitation in placing it on record, such greyhounds as the champion prize winner, Jeannie Deans, her dam, Roe, and Mr J. Russell’s Rock being dogs of no mean merit. The saplings were numerous, and many promising youngsters turned up, Mr Meider’s Fitzroy, a very fine son of Rock and Lulu, came in too late to compete, otherwise he might have had a place in the prize list. In collies I found several high-class specimens; an exceedingly fine dog is Mr Stanton’s Luath 111., a son of Young England and Ormskirk Starlight, and should he go on improving will be a hard nut to crack next year. It was no small task for him to put dow the well-known coated dog Herdwick, but as shown on Friday, I think he handsomely beat Mr Horrax’s crack, good dog though he undoubtedly is, as the “ old ’un ” showed anything but well, whereas the New Light made the best of himself ; his superior head and collie character carried him well to the front. Following these two “ top sawyers,” I specially liked Rimu, Snowdrop, Eden Regina, Eden, Rex, Hermit, and Way’s Pippo, whilst several others received cards of commendation deservedly. Fox terriers came next, but there was room for much improvement here. Mr 11. Stevens’ Turk

V., a son of Vano and Harewood Torment, carried all before him easily, his strongest opponents being Melbourne Harmony and Rowland Jack. Setters as a lot were poor, the exceptions being Mr Stone’s Snipe, a fair English, and Mr Henderson’s Bess, a good Gordon. New blood is evidently wanted in these classes. Pointers were numerous, but the best were far from cracks, the majority being coarse, heavy specimens, which would have ’no chance in classical company. Spaniels were generally poor, and without any really high-class specimens amongst them. Skyes were moderate, and although there were several entries in Scotch terriers, there was only one dog of the breed exhibited, Mr Smith’s Satan, 1 a very nice dog, his only fault being a little crookedness in the fore-legs, a fault which, however, is very common in this breed. Those little rough fellows, generally known in Australia as Australian terriers, turned up fairly well, all being of the sandy variety. Bulldogs need improvement, as also do the pugs. Irish terriers have only one representative, a moderate specimen. Surely these useful vermin exterminators are worth taking up. One or two nice curlv retrievers were shown —in fact, better than we often see in this country. Mastiffs were poorly represented, and although St. Bernards did fairly well in numbers, there was a lack of quality, and a change of blood is much needed. The same remark would apply to Newfoundlands. The prize list in the sporting class was as follows :— GREYHOUNDS. Winner, dog or bitch : 1, Mr R. Barber’s Roe, by Ivanhoe. Open class, dog, aged : 1, Mr John Russell’s Rock, by Rocket; 2, Mr R. Barber’s Ronald, by Kangaroo. Open class, bitch, aged : 1 and special and New Zealand Kennel Club Cup, Mr W. The Cavour cigar combines mildness, quality, and cheapness. Sold in packets of Bat Is 3d by all tobacconists. The Cavour Cigars should fill a long-felt want, and they have already met with ready sale wherever introduced.
