At Home in the Bush
by Leonie Garvey, 64pp limpbound, Deed Printing, 16 Bowen Street, Waiuku, RRP$19.95 Know That Bird by Marion Rego, illustrated by Elizabeth Gabites, 32pp limpbound, Seagull Press, PO Box 211, Otaki, We don’t usually ‘notice’ children’s books but these
two originate from keen Forest and Bird members who have published them to encourage an interest in nature in local schools. At Home in the Bush offers an interesting text about trees and plants to find in the forest. There are interesting facts, including Maori uses of the plants. Sadly, the colour photographs are not always well printed, but the text and the ideas should be interesting to the beginner. Know That Bird introduces a range of 21 species with very simple watercolours. The idea is to learn something about the most common birds, in language that is easy for children to read.
